E’ uno dei massimi esperti di Stephen King, oltre a essere suo amico ed essere stato recentemente suo consulente per la stesura dell’imminente “Doctor Sleep”, attesissimo seguito di “Shining”… ma Rocky Wood è anche un grande ricercatore nel campo dell’ufologia e delle forme di vita extraterrestri, è un giornalista, uno scrittore a sua volta, ha vinto prestigiosi premi e tante tante altre cose. Per farcele raccontare tutte, o quasi, lo abbiamo raggiunto in Australia e ci siamo fatti raccontare un po’ della sua vita.
PENSO CHE POSSIAMO COMINCIARE DALL’INIZIO: CHI E’ ROCKY WOOD?
Sono nato in Nuova Zelanda e vivo in Australia. Ho iniziato a scrivere da freelance 35 anni fa e ho pubblicato il mio primo libro nel 2006. Mi sono specializzato in informazioni su Stephen King dal 2002, cosa che mi ha portato ad aderire alla “Horror Writers Association”. Sono entrato nel loro Consiglio nel 2008 e sono stato eletto presidente nel 2010, rieletto nel 2012. COME HAI INIZIATO A SCRIVERE?
Sono sempre stato un lettore vorace, ma ho cominciato a scrivere professionalmente quando avevo 18 anni. Il miglior consiglio è di scrivere di ciò che si conosce, così ho iniziato a scrivere una rubrica sugli UFO per un quotidiano nazionale; e per il settore della sicurezza (dove avevo un lavoro part-time).
I TUOI LIBRI PIU’ FAMOSI SONO SAGGI SU STEPHEN KING. COSA PUOI DIRCI IN MERITO?
Il mio lavoro originale era “The Complete Guide to the Works of Stephen King” (“La guida completa alle opere di Stephen King”), un progetto che ho sviluppato con l’assistenza di altri due. E’ stato pubblicato nel 2002 e l’ultima nel 2004, con circa 6800 pagine (sì, 6800) su CD-ROM. Analizzava il lavoro pubblicato da King, insieme a tutte le opere inedite conosciute (durante le ricerche ho scoperto 12 opere inedite che erano precedentemente sconosciute).
Da lì ho continuato a scrivere “Stephen King: Uncollected, Unpublished,” (“Stephen King: Non raccolto, Inedito”), che esamina circa 100 opere di narrativa di King che sono inedite, o non sono apparse nelle sue antologie. L’ho aggiornato un certo numero di volte cosi che è attualmente alla sua quarta edizione. Ultimamente, ho avuto la fortuna di lavorare con il Re in persona per aggiungere nuove informazioni, correggere le informazioni obsolete o errate che fluttuavano intorno al mondo del Re. Quel libro è stato nominato per il “Bram Stoker Award”, il più prestigioso premio nel genere horror.
“Stephen King: The Non Fiction” (“Stephen King: la saggistica”) è un libro che ho scritto con Justin Brooks. Copre quasi un migliaio di pezzi di saggistica di King. E’ l’unico libro mai pubblicato che copre questa parte importante del Re canonico. Anche questo è stato nominato per il “Bram Stoker Award”.
L’ultimo è “Stephen King: A Literary Companion” (“Stephen King: un compagno letterario”) che copre tutta la narrativa di King, i suoi principali personaggi e luoghi (come Castle Rock). Quel libro ha vinto il “Bram Stoker Award” nel 2012, quindi ne sono molto orgoglioso.
PUOI DIRCI QUALCOSA SULLA TUA AMICIZIA CON IL RE?
Non molto. Steve è un ragazzo incredibilmente generoso considerando le enormi richieste del suo tempo. E’ stato un piacere fare ricerche su “Doctor Sleep” per lui e vedere come ha costruito il romanzo capitolo per capitolo.
ALTRI TUOI LAVORI IMPORTANTI SONO LE DUE GRAPHIC NOVEL “HORRORS! GREAT STORIES OF FEAR AND THEIR CREATORS” E “WITCH HUNTS: A GRAPHIC HISTORY OF THE BURNING TIMES”: COSA PUOI RACCONTARCI IN MERITO?
Queste sono due delle mie tre incursioni nella narrativa! Mi è stato chiesto da un editore a scrivere il primo, “Horrors!”, che reinventa il modo in cui sono usciti i grandi racconti dell’orrore del 19° secolo sono usciti - da “Frankenstein”, attraverso Poe a “Dracula”, con un sacco di altri nel mezzo. Il mio grande amico Glenn Chadbourne ha illustrato il libro nel suo solito modo dettagliato e tenebroso.
“Witch Hunts” è stato un altro libro su richiesta dell’editore ed ero entusiasta di lavorare con l’incredibilmente talentuosa scrittrice dell’orrore Lisa Morton nello sviluppo della sceneggiatura; e con il rapidamente emergente scrittore e illustratore australiano Greg Chapman. In quel libro esponiamo la vera storia della terribile fase di caccia alle streghe della storia, e le vere ragioni dietro di essa. E’ un libro importante che affronta punti importanti e ha vinto il “Bram Stoker Award”.
QUALI SONO STATE LE DIFFICOLTÀ CHE HAI INCONTRATO NELLA CREAZIONE DEI PERSONAGGI E DELLE AMBIENTAZIONI?
Ce ne sono state davvero poche – il problema principale stava nel selezionare cosa lasciare fuori!
COME HAI AVUTO L’IDEA DI QUESTE DUE STORIE?
Sono un grande lettore di Storia. Credo che possiamo imparare molto da essa. Per “Horrors!” l’ispirazione è stata “se queste storie fossero vere, e non una finzione?”. Quanto a “Witch Hunts” avevo letto di Heinrich Kramer, il peggiore dei cacciatori di streghe, un malvagio misogino.
CON I TUOI LIBRI HAI VINTO MOLTI PREMI. VUOI DIRCI COME TI SENTI QUANDO VEDI CHE LE TUE “CREATURE” SONO COSI’ POPOLARI E APPREZZATE?
E’ sempre gratificante vedere il proprio lavoro apprezzato. I feedback dei lettori e le vendite sono meravigliosi. Poi, vedere i tuoi coetanei scegliere il tuo lavoro fra tutti gli altri dell’anno è, ovviamente, un brivido. Sono lieto che i libri di Stephen King siano conosciuti, come credo che saranno la base per le borse di studio dedicate a King anche molto tempo dopo che Steve e io saremo morti.
L’ANNO PROSSIMO I TUOI LIBRI VERRANNO TRADOTTI IN ITALIA (DA MEZZOTINTS EBOOK). COSA PENSI DEL NOSTRO PAESE?
Io amo l’Italia! Ho avuto la fortuna di visitarla molte volte. Parte della mia luna di miele era a Venezia, e ho trascorso un po’ di tempo a Milano e intorno alle zone lacustri come Bellagio sul Lago di Como. La vostra cucina è la migliore del mondo!

Sono amico di Erich von Daniken (“Chariots of the Gods?” – “Gli extraterrestri torneranno?”, in italiano, ndr) dal 1978. I miei studi e il senso comune mi dicono che sarebbe sorprendente se non ci fossero civiltà aliene e non fossimo stati visitati.
IN QUESTI ANNI HAI SEMPRE AVUTO UNA PREDILEZIONE PER IL FANTASTICO. CHE SIGNIFICATO HA PER TE QUESTA TEMATICA?
Beh, leggo e scrivo quello che mi interessa. Parte di questo è “fantastico” e inspiegabile – una ragione in più per cui si dovrebbe indagare il settore.
QUALI SONO I TUOI SCRITTORI PREFERITI?
Stephen King, Peter Straub, James A Michener, Tom Clancy, Jonathan Maberry, Lisa Morton, Gene O’Neill, Margaret Mitchell, George R.R. Martin, Allen Drury. Nel settore saggistica Martin Gilbert, Simon Winchester, Antony Beevor. Ma questi sono solo alcuni – ho letto molto genere horror, storia, politica e attualità, sport, viaggi e narrativa mainstream.
E I TUOI FILM PREFERITI?
Via col vento, Le ali della libertà, Il miglio verde, la trilogia di Il Signore degli Anelli, Brian di Nazareth, La vita è bella (un film italiano, ovviamente), Schindler List, 2001: Odissea nello spazio e molti, molti altri. Sono anche un grande fan di serie televisive di alta qualità come Justified, Deadwood, I Soprano, Boardwalk Empire, The Walking Dead, Breaking Bad e così via.
NELL’OTTOBRE 2010 TI E’ STATA DIAGNOSTICATA UNA MALATTIA DEL NEURONE MOTORE (MND) O SCLEROSI LATERALE AMIOTROFICA (SLA)… CE NE VUOI PARLARE?
Beh, devi ovviamente affrontare il sentirti dire che hai una malattia che lentamente ti priva della tua capacità di parlare, camminare e alla fine di muoverti del tutto; e che ti ucciderà, più o meno entro 3-5 anni. Una malattia che, nonostante 75 anni di ricerche, non è ancora vicina all’essere curata, o bloccata. Una malattia silenziosa che uccide migliaia di persone ogni anno, ma tutto ciò è curiosamente in gran parte ignorato dai media.
Detto questo, ho sempre vissuto la vita al massimo e ho continuato a farlo da quel giorno – viaggiando, scrivendo, dirigendo la “Horror Writers Association” (HWA) e trascorrendo il tempo prezioso con la famiglia. Farò tutto questo, e ancor più, finché potrò!
L’ULTIMA DOMANDA. CHE PROGETTI HAI PER IL FUTURO E QUALI SONO I TUOI SOGNI?
Sto aggiornando “Stephen King: Uncollected, Unpublished” (ho già 60 pagine manoscritte), ho un sacco di buone sfide alla HWA, spero di viaggiare fino a quando la mia salute lo permetterà. Guardo la mia squadra sportiva preferita, come gli All Blacks, il Manchester United e il gioco dei Boston Red Sox. Vedo la mia famiglia ogni giorno. Come direbbe Guido, “La vita è bella”.

I am New Zealand born and live in Australia. I began freelance writing 35 years ago and published my first book in 2006. I have specialized in information about Stephen King since 2002, which lead me to join the Horror Writers Association. I joined their Board in 2008 and was elected President in 2010, re-elected in 2012. Aside from writing my passions are family, reading, travel and following top level sport. HOW DID YOU BEGIN TO WRITE?
I was always a voracious reader but I began to write professionally when I was 18. The best advice is write what you know, so I began writing a column about UFOs in a national newspaper; and about the security industry (where I had a part time job).
YOUR MOST FAMOUS BOOKS ARE NON-FICTION WORKS ABOUT STEPHEN KING. WHAT CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THEM?
My original work was “The Complete Guide to the Works of Stephen King”, a project I developed and was assisted by two others. It was first published in 2002 and last in 2004, with some 6800 pages (yes, 6800) on CD-ROM. It analyzed published work of King; along with all known unpublished works (during research I discovered 12 unpublished works that were previously unknown).
From there I went on to write “Stephen King: Unpublished, Uncollected” which examines 100 or so works of fiction by King that are unpublished; or haven’t appeared in his collections. I have updated that a number of times, so that it’s currently in its fourth edition. Lately, I have been lucky enough to work with King himself on adding new information, correcting outdated or wrong information floating around the King world. That book was nominated for the “Bram Stoker Award”, the most prestigious Award in the horror genre.
“Stephen King: The Non Fiction” is a book I wrote with Justin Brooks. It covers nearly a thousand pieces of non-fiction by King. It is the only book ever published that covers this important part of King’s canon. It was also nominated for a “Bram Stoker Award”.
The latest is “Stephen King: A Literary Companion” that covers all King’s fiction, his major characters and places (such as Castle Rock). That book won the Bram Stoker Award for 2012, so I am quite proud of it.
CAN YOU SAY ANYTHING TO US ABOUT YOUR FRIENDSHIP WITH THE KING?
Not much. Steve is an incredibly generous guy, considering the huge demands on his time. It was a pleasure to do research on ‘Doctor Sleep’ for him and watch as he built that novel chapter by chapter.
OTHER YOUR IMPORTANT WORKS ARE THE TWO GRAPHIC NOVELS “HORRORS! GREAT STORIES OF FEAR AND THEIR CREATORS” AND “WITCH HUNTS: A GRAPHIC HISTORY OF THE BURNING TIMES”: WHAT CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THEM?
These are two of my three forays into fiction! I was asked by a publisher to write the first, “Horrors!”, which reimagines the way the great horror tales of the 19th Century came about – from “Frankenstein”, through Poe to “Dracula”, with plenty of other in between. My great friend Glenn Chadbourne illustrated the book in his usual detailed and dark way.
“Witch Hunts” was another book the publisher requested and I was thrilled to work with the incredibly talented horror writer, Lisa Morton in developing the script; and the rapidly up and coming Australian writer and illustrator Greg Chapman. In that book we expose the true history of the awful witch hunting phase of history, and the real reasons behind it. It’s an important book that makes important points and won the Bram Stoker Award.
WHICH WERE THE DIFFICULTIES YOU MET WITH THE CREATION OF THE CHARACTERS AND OF THE LOCATIONS?
There really were few – the main problem was selecting what to leave out!
HOW DID YOU GET THE IDEA OF THESE TWO STORIES?
I am a great reader of history. I believe we can learn a lot from it. For “Horrors!” the inspiration was, “What if these stories were true, and not fiction?”. As to “Witch Hunts” I had been reading about Heinrich Kramer, the worst of the witch hunters, an evil misogynist.

It is always rewarding to see your work appreciated. Reader feedback and sales are wonderful. Then to see your peers choose your work out of all the others that year is obviously a thrill. I am pleased that the Stephen King books are recognized, as I believe they’ll be a base for King scholarship long after Steve and I are dead.

I love Italy! I have been fortunate to visit many times. Part of my honeymoon was in Venice; and I’ve spent some time in Milan and around the lake areas such as Bellagio on Lago di Como. Your cuisine is the best in the world!

Well, I read and write about what interests me. Some of that is ‘amazing’ and unexplained – all the more reason why one should investigate the area.

I am also a great fan of high quality series television such as Justified, Deadwood, The Sopranos, Boardwalk Empire, The Walking Dead, Breaking Bad and so on.
IN OCTOBER 2010 YOU WERE DIAGNOSED WITH MOTOR NEURONE DISEASE (MND) OR AMYOTROPHIC LATERAL SCLEROSIS (ALS)… DO YOU WANT TO SPEAK US ABOUT IT?
Well, it’s obviously confronting to be told you have a disease that will slowly rob you of your ability to speak, walk and finally move at all; and that will kill you, mostly like within 3-5 years. A disease that, despite 75 years of research, is really no closer to being cured, or stopped. A silent disease that kills thousands ever year but one which is curiously largely ignored by the media.
Having said that, I have always lived live to the full and I have continued to do so from that day – travelling, writing, running the “Horror Writers Association” (HWA) and spending valuable time with the family. I will do that, and more, as long as I can!
THE LAST REQUEST. WHICH PLANS DO YOU HAVE FOR THE FUTURE AND WHICH ARE YOUR DREAMS?
I am updating “Stephen King: Uncollected, Unpublished” (I already have 60 manuscript pages); I have lots of good challenges at the HWA; I hope to travel as long as my health allows. I watch my favorite sporting team such as the All Blacks, Manchester United and the Boston Red Sox play. I see my family every day. As Guido would say, “La vita è bella”.
