Kevin Hearne è uno scrittore di mezza età che ama definirsi un nerd, perché è ancora oggi un appassionato di fumetti ed heavy metal vecchia scuola e adora abbracciare gli alberi e dipingere soldatini. Ha ottenuto un grande successo con “Le cronache dell’ultimo druido”, una saga di cui al momento sono stati pubblicati sei volumi (ma ce ne sono altri tre in preparazione) e di cui è appena stato pubblicato in Italia il primo, “In fuga”, grazie a Fanucci Editore. Abbiamo avuto il piacere di intervistarlo per voi: state a sentire (o meglio a leggere) cosa ci ha raccontato.
PENSO CHE POSSIAMO INIZIARE DAL PRINCIPIO: CHI E’ KEVIN HEARNE?
Sono l’autore di “Le cronache dell’ultimo druido”, bestseller del New York Times, e al momento sto lavorando a un romanzo di “Star Wars”.
COME HAI COMINCIATO A SCRIVERE?
Ho iniziato a scrivere al college dopo aver letto “Qualcuno volò sul nido del cuculo” di Ken Kesey. Questo è ciò che mi ha ispirato. Anche se mi ci è voluto molto tempo per capire come scrivere materiale pubblicabile.
I TUOI LIBRI PIU’ FAMOSI APPARTENGONO ALLA SAGA DI “LE CRONACHE DELL’ULTIMO DRUIDO”: COSA PUOI DIRCI IN MERITO?
Tratta di un druido vecchio di 2100 anni che viene attaccato dalle divinità irlandesi che vogliono ucciderlo. Quando decide di combattere invece di scappare, le conseguenze di tale decisione continuano ad aumentare su di lui. C’è un sacco di mitologia in esso e un levriero irlandese “parlante” che adora la salsiccia e le barboncine francesi.
COME HAI INVENTATO LA STORIA E COME SI E’ SVILUPPATA LA SERIE?
La storia è costruita attorno a eventi mitologici. La spada che ruba Atticus, per esempio, è stata donata a Conn delle Cento Battaglie dai Tuatha Dé Danann, ma mai restituita. Continuo a infilare mitologia negli eventi dei giorni nostri.
RECENTEMENTE I TUOI LIBRI SONO STATI TRADOTTI IN ITALIA. COSA NE PENSI DEL NOSTRO PAESE?
Non vedo l’ora di visitarlo, onestamente. Mia moglie è italiana, la sua bisnonna Roperti è venuta negli Stati Uniti all’inizio del XX secolo, e così mia moglie vorrebbe visitarlo. Stiamo progettando di venire la prossima estate per visitare Roma e Firenze perché il Libro 8 sarà ambientato in parte a Roma, ed entrambi vogliamo visitare Firenze fin da quando eravamo giovani.
QUALI SONO I TUOI SCRITTORI PREFERITI?
I miei preferiti sono Ken Kesey, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Neil Gaiman e Walt Whitman. Oh, e quel ragazzo di Shakespeare. Era abbastanza bravo.
E I TUOI FILM PREFERITI?
“Star Wars”, “Pulp Fiction”, “Blade Runner”, “Aliens”, “Monty Python e il Sacro Graal”, “I soliti sospetti”, “Dentro la notizia”, “The Boondock Saints – Giustizia finale”.
PARLANDO DI CINEMA, DOBBIAMO ASPETTARCI QUALCHE LAVORO (FILM O SERIE TV) DAI TUOI LIBRI?
Sarebbe bello, ma al momento nulla è in cantiere.
ULTIMA DOMANDA. CHE PROGRAMMI HAI PER IL FUTURO E QUALI SONO I TUOI SOGNI?
In questo preciso momento sto lavorando a un romanzo di “Star Wars” e poi inizierò a lavorare su un fantasy epico, quindi guardo al futuro con quei progetti. Diversamente sto vivendo il sogno di scrivere storie che la gente apprezza.

I THINK WE CAN START FROM THE BEGINNING: WHO’S KEVIN HEARNE?
I’m the author of the New York Times bestselling Iron Druid Chronicles, and I’m currently working on a Star Wars novel.
HOW DID YOU BEGIN TO WRITE?
I began to write in college after reading One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest by Ken Kesey. That’s what inspired me. It took me a long time to figure out how to write publishable material, though.
YOUR MOST FAMOUS BOOKS ARE “THE IRON DRUID” SAGA: WHAT CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT IT?
It’s about a 2,100 year old Druid hanging out from Irish gods who want to kill him. When he decides to fight instead of run, the consequences of that decision keep growing on him. There’s plenty of mythology in it and a “talking” Irish Wolfhound who’s into sausage and French Poodles.
HOW DID YOU INVENT THE STORY AND HOW IT HAS DEVELOPED THE SERIES?
The story is constructed around events in mythology. The sword Atticus steals, for example, was given to Conn of the Hundred Battles by the Tuatha Dé Danann but never returned. I continue to thread mythology in with events of the modern day.
RECENTLY YOUR BOOKS ARE TRANSLATED IN ITALY. WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT OUR COUNTRY?
Can’t wait to visit, honestly. My wife’s Italian; her great-grandmother Roperti came over to the US in the early twentieth century, and so my wife would like to visit as well. We’re planning to come over next summer to visit Rome and Florence because book 8 will be set partially in Rome, and we’ve both wanted to visit Florence since we were young.

My favorites are Ken Kesey, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Neil Gaiman, and Walt Whitman. Oh, and that Shakespeare guy. He was pretty good.

That would be nice, but nothing is in the works right now.
THE LAST REQUEST. WHICH PLANS DO YOU HAVE FOR THE FUTURE AND WHICH ARE YOUR DREAMS?
Right now I’m working on a Star Wars novel and after that I will begin to work on an epic fantasy, so I’m looking forward to those projects. Otherwise I’m living the dream—writing stories that people enjoy.
